YGB QUESTIONS

  1. What do you think Hawthorne's purpose was for writing this story?
1) I think that Hawthorne's purpose for writing this story is to simply tell a story to someone. Also, maybe he has heard the stories of the devil and thought he could make his own story out of it.

2. Hawthorne states that Brown's wife is "aptly named" Faith.  After reading the story, do you agree?  Does Faith's name fit her personality?  Does Brown have true faith in her?

2)  I agree that Brown's wife has a lot of faith, but not as much in Goodman Brown because she tried as hard as she could to keep him from going on his journey. I also, don't think Brown had faith in faith because even after faith warning him, he still went without even thinking why did she not want him to go on the journey.

3. What do you think the pink ribbons signify?

3) I think that pink ribbons signify happiness because when Goodman brown left to go on his journey when he looked back her pink ribbons weren't in site.

4. Was everything Brown witnessed real, a figment of his imagination, something conjured by evil, or a dream?  Support your answer with passages from the text.

4) I think that Brown was seeing a figment of his imagination because when Goodman Brown figured out that who he was walking with was the Devil, they met with a woman that Goodman Brown looked up and had showed him his faith. Then if she was a Devil worshiper then why would she do all of this for Goodman Brown if she knew that one day Goodman Brown would end up loosing his faith.

5.Who do you think the old man really is?  What textual clues tell you this?

5) I think that the old man is the devil. Some parts in the story that can represent this is when the staff looks like a snake. This can be from the bible that represents temptation. Also, since the staff represents temptation, the old man always tells Goodman Brown to go further and Goodman Brown keeps going even if he doesn't want too.

6.What does the staff represent?  Do you think the staff leads Brown onward or is the primary motivator Brown's own conscience/mind?

6) I think that the staff represents conscience because when Goodman Brown touched the staff the staff dried up and that could mean that Goodman Brown made some bad decisions.

7.If Brown had not ventured into the forest, how would his life be different?  If he'd stayed home, would Brown still have Faith?  Would he still trust his wife and his fellow townspeople

7) I think that Goodman Brown would have been a lot different if he hadn't went on his journey. Faith tried to tell Goodman Brown to not go, maybe for good reason. Maybe if he would have not left, the Devil would think that his temptation cant work on him or faith.
